"A Trauma-Informed, Faith-Based Recovery Movement for healing, restoration, and second chances — rooted in lived experience, trauma-informed care, and the belief that lasting recovery is possible."
— The Second Step Inc.

Meet the Founder
Alfredo Martinez spent 35 years in active addiction. His journey wasn't about abstinence or compliance — it was about something much deeper. He came to understand that addiction is not a moral failure. It is about disconnection — from self, from society, and from unresolved trauma.
That understanding changed everything. The approach Alfredo brings to The Second Step is not about changing who you are. It's about reconnecting to who you truly are. We don't want to change you — we want to help you change what you do, by rediscovering the person you were always meant to be.
Out of that lived experience, The Second Step Inc. was born — a movement rooted in compassion, faith, and the unshakeable belief that lasting recovery is possible for everyone.
Alfredo is a compassionate and dedicated recovery advocate with extensive lived experience, peer support training, and community service focused on helping individuals overcome addiction, trauma, grief, and life challenges. He is an experienced public speaker, mentor, and recovery sponsor with a strong commitment to empowering others through encouragement, education, and practical support.
He has volunteered with Bexar County reentry programs, job fairs, recovery events, and group facilitation efforts that support individuals rebuilding their lives after incarceration and crisis. Alfredo is actively involved in community outreach and faith-based initiatives, supporting individuals working toward stability, healing, and personal growth.
Alfredo is a certified Recovery Support Peer Specialist (RSPS) and is currently pursuing certifications as a Certified Trauma Coach and Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC). He credits his recovery and transformation to faith, and dedicates his work to helping others who are walking the same path he once did.
"When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, 'Do you want to get well?'"
"Sir," the invalid replied, "I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me."
Then Jesus said to him, "Get up! Pick up your mat and walk."
— John 5:6–8
This passage reflects Alfredo's journey of restoration and his belief in second chances, healing, and forward movement in recovery.
"We don't want to change who you are — we want to help you change what you do, by reconnecting you to who you truly are."

What Guides Us
Everything we do is shaped by an understanding of trauma. We create safe, predictable, and empowering environments where healing can actually take root.
Our approach isn't theoretical — it's personal. We walk alongside people because we know the road ourselves. Compassion without judgment is our foundation.
Lasting recovery is built on more than willpower. We provide the structure, accountability, and faith-informed encouragement that sustains real change.
Healing happens in relationship. We build genuine community where individuals are known, supported, and celebrated at every step forward.
Our work is rooted in faith, but spiritual participation is always optional. We honor every person's journey and belief system.
Recovery is more than sobriety. We address the full person — emotional, practical, spiritual, and social — through our four pillars of support.
We believe lasting recovery is possible for everyone. Every interaction is fueled by genuine hope and the conviction that second chances are real.
We meet every person exactly where they are — no prerequisites, no shame. Every individual deserves dignity and a genuine chance to rebuild.
Whether you're seeking support for yourself, a loved one, or a client — we're here. Reach out today and let's take the next step together.
